The Joystrings formed in 1963 & all members were in the Salvation Army in the UK. Major Joy Webb (Joy was a Captain at the time) is listed as the founder of the Joystrings. "It's an open Secret' entered the charts in 1964 & rose to the dizzy heights of 32. Not bad for a Christian beat group! However, the only other minor hit they had was with a Christmas song, 'A Starry Night' - which peaked at 34 in the UK charts Christmas1965. The main members of the group were: Bill Davidson, Peter Dalziel, Joy Webb, Sylvia Gair (married Peter Dalziel) & Wycliffe Noble (eventually, Wycliffe Noble OBE) - the group disbanded in July 1969. The Joystrings record label was 'Regal Zonophone' (EMI). The group have been known as the 'Joy Strings' & the 'Joystrings!'
The Joystrings have had reunions in 2004 & 2009. Very sadly, temporary member, Pauline Jane (married name: Banks) died in 2008. Other members of the Joystrings (usually for about 6 months each) were: Thelma Adams, Brenda Alexander, Lillian Booth, Ruth Swainsbury, Handel Everret, Lars Dunberg, Nigel Robson & Roger Woodrow. It was the Salvation Army hiarchy who disbanded the Joystrings, & Bill Davidson was known to have said, 'I felt our work wasn't finished'. Many fans were distraught when the Joystrings disbanded, before their time, & when they were at their peak.
Bill Davidson went on to record albums with another group of Salvation Army members - 'Good News!' Bill also recorded 3 solo albums entitled: "Star Wars of Darkness & Light', 'I Belong to You' & 'Not for easy Listeners'. Bill is now a Pastor of a church (Church of the King) in New York, USA & is 67 years old & married to Jean, and they have 2 children & adopted another. Joy Webb recorded a solo EP 'I am a Bridge' (4 songs) on the EMI label. Peter Dalziel, along with fellow Joystring, Bill Davidson (+ Barry Evans) were vocalists on a musical entitled 'Spirit' (vinyl LP), on the 'Banner & Bonnets' label. Peter & Sylvia Dalziel continued to record albums, as a duet, including the album 'Two by Two' (1980). Peter & Sylvia's singing voices still as wonderful as ever!
