Dimitris Kamarotos was born in Athens , Greece . Studied Music, Economics and Informatics in Greece and continued studying Music in Paris , with Composition and Clarinet (univ. Paris I and VIII and also Ecole Normale). Studied music analysis and composition with Daniel Charles, Emile Damais, Iannis Xenakis, with Horacio Vaggionne and Marc Battier, computer Music, Maurice Jarre music for films. He continued his post Grad. studying in the IRCAM on use of artificial intelligence as a compositional tool. In Greece he created and directed contemporary and experimental Music Ensembles: Athenaeum Music Ensemble (1988-92), “Pros” (1985-91), “Intermediate Space” (1990-93), “FF&2” (1998-00), “Electric Breath” (2001-02), “Stationary Machinery” (2005).
His research activities include the direction of the research project “HXE – a sonic map of Greece” (CCMR and NTUA), concept and creation of exploratory tools for music education in Greek elementary Schools, responsible for the underwater capture of mammal sounds in the marine park of Northern Sporades, research manager of the Contemporary Music Research Centre (1985-94).
Collaborated with prof. Brad Garton and T. Rikakis ( Columbia Un.) for the creation of the computer music lab of the CCMR in Athens and the program of Psychoacoustics in Aristotle Univ. With prof. Perry Cook ( Princeton Un.) in the creation of the Greek instrument for diction and singing (IGDIS) and with pr. S. Theodoridis and A. Pikrarkis ( Athens Un.) on the creation of tools for recognition of Greek traditional music patterns. Many of these research results have been published ( Computer Musical Journal , IEEE ICECS , ICMConference , EUSIPCO ). He is founding member of the «ODC Ensemble» working on new presentation of Homeric texts (performed in Edinburgh , Alexandria , N.York, Princeton Un.). Also founding member of the HELCA (Hellenic Electroacoustic Music Composers Association). He participates through music composition and performance in the exploratory approach of music function in theater. Particularly regarding the creation of a choros group through singing and music playing as a dramatourgy-creating tool. His music for theatre, film and interactive music control received different awards ( ? rs Electronique , fest . Bourges , Audience Award 2005). He has also contributed with his music in multimedia productions (Portraits of Byzantium by Lambarkis Foundation , Kaleydoscope educative tools, Islamic Art Collection DVD by Benaki Museum ). He co-directed with Michael Marmarinos “Five Acts for Double Bass”, 1996 and with actress Amalia Moutousis “Cassandra – GiG”, 2004 – 05.
Some noteworthy moments of his music within theatre productions during the last years: “Medea” and “Medea Fragments” (Diplous Eros theatre company and Michael Marmarinos), “Romantism”, “Hamlet”, “Electra”, “National Hymn” (also with Diplous Eros theatre company and MM), “Romeo + Juliet, The Third Memory”, “2004 – Instructions Manual” (with “Theseum Ensemble” and MM),
Also: with National Theatre “Oedipus Rex” dir. By Vassilis Papavasiliou, “Ajax” (State Theatre of Northern Greece), Hamletmachine (State Th. of N. Gr., dir.
