In Focus: Archie Shepp

A stalwart of jazz and afrocentric music since the 1960s, and a guiding figure to this very day, Archie Shepp carved a wild, free, impressionistic shape from the genre, creating a new, avant-garde, free jazz. Sessioning and recording in New York with greats like Coltrane, Cecil Taylor & Don Cherry from early in his career, Shepp would go on to be the central player in provocative and dissonant albums like Fire Music, and The Magic of Ju-Ju, inspired by Black militancy in the US and African musical traditions.
