Focus on Eric Dolphy

Jazz multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy was a key figure in jazz's leap into the avant-garde in the early 1960s alongside Ornette Coleman, and was an experimental influence on John Coltrane as member of his touring band.

His nascent "free jazz" style featured ecstatic, lengthy improvisations that defied musical logic, non-musical speech-like sound. He also pioneered bass clarinet as a solo jazz instrument.
