Γιώργος Ζαμπέτας

Γιώργος Ζαμπέτας has been played on NTS shows including Donna Leake, with Ta Matoklada Sou Laboun first played on 7 September 2023.

Γιώργος Ζαμπέτας (Giorgos Zampetas, sometimes romanized as George Zambetas) was a well-known bouzouki musician. He was born in 25 January 1925 in Athens but his origins are from Kithnos. He died in 10 March 1992.

His parents were Μιχάλης Ζαμπέτας (Mihalis Zampetas), a barber and Μαρίκα Μωραΐτη (Marika Moraiti), niece of a well-known baritone of those years.

From a very young age, Γιώργος Ζαμπέτας showed a great interest for music: as he was helping his father in his barber shop, he secretly played his first melodies on a bouzouki. Anything that was producing sound seemed exciting to him and helped him in his compositions, as he said in his biography not long before he died. In 1932 at the age of 7 he won his first prize, as a student of the first grade, playing his first song in a school competition.

He was self-taught and is considered one of the most important laika/bouzouki composers and players to this day.
