The Sisterhood was a short-lived English musical project, consisting of Andrew Eldritch (writer and producer), his drum machine Doktor Avalanche, and "The Chorus Of Vengeance" (Lucas Fox -- percussion and vocals, Patricia Morrison -- vocals, James Ray -- guitar and vocals, and Alan Vega). Eldritch could not perform vocals on the studio recordings because of his earlier recording contract for his band The Sisters Of Mercy. The Sisterhood was created by Eldritch after The Sisters Of Mercy's 1985 breakup. There was an initial amicable agreement between Eldritch and the leaving band members -- Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams, who were not founding members -- that The Sisters Of Mercy would end with their departure, and none of them would use the band name. Yet soon afterwards Eldritch caught wind that Hussey and Adams were circulating demo tapes under similar band names for their next project and preparing to use "The Sisterhood." After being informed that they could not legally be prevented from using that name, as it was not similar enough to "The Sisters Of Mercy," Eldritch hastily recorded and released the single "Giving Ground" through his independent Merciful Release label under The Sisterhood name, and shortly after an album titled "Gift" (chosen by the Hamburg-residing Eldritch to mean "poison" in German), making The Sisterhood unavailable for the taking -- with the added bonus of earning a publishing advance check from RCA for being the first one after The Sisters Of Mercy's breakup to release an album. The project ended its existence in 1986 after it had served its purpose. Andrew Eldritch continued on to reform The Sisters Of Mercy, and rerecorded "Colours" from "Gift" with his vocals as a B-side to their comeback single "This Corrosion." He has often included his material from The Sisterhood in The Sisters Of Mercy's live shows since 1993.
