Sabrina Setlur (born January 10, 1974, in Frankfurt am Main), is a German rapper and actress. She has sold over two million records and is recognized as the first female rapper to achieve a number-one single in the German charts.
Setlur was born to Indian immigrant parents and spent much of her childhood in Bad Soden am Taunus and Schwalbach am Taunus. While attending the Liebigschule in Frankfurt, she met Thomas Hofmann, later co-founder of the label Pelham Power Productions (3P), who encouraged her in 1993 to perform rap. She subsequently abandoned her business administration studies to sign a recording contract with 3P.
In 1995, performing under the pseudonym Schwester S., Setlur released the double A-side single "Hier kommt die Schwester"/"Pass auf," produced by Moses Pelham. Her breakthrough came with the single "Ja klar," followed by her debut album "S ist soweit," which reached number eleven on the German album charts. She received the Echo Pop award for National Artist in 1996 and hosted her own hip-hop program on the radio station hr3.
Her second album, "Die neue S-Klasse," was released in 1997 under her real name and reached number ten on the German album charts, selling over 300,000 copies within months. The lead single, "Du liebst mich nicht," reached number one, making Setlur the first female rapper to top the German singles chart. That year, she embarked on the "S-Klasse-Tour," served as a support act for Michael Jackson and the Fugees, and performed at Rock am Ring. The album also produced the singles "Glaubst Du mir?," "Nur mir," and "Folge dem Stern." Legal disputes arose over "Nur mir" concerning alleged copyright issues with Kraftwerk.
In 1999, Setlur collaborated with Faithless on the single "Bring My Family Back" and released "Freisein" with Xavier Naidoo. Her third studio album, "Aus der Sicht und mit den Worten von …," reached number three on the album charts and earned her a third Echo award. The song "Alles," recorded with Xavier Naidoo for the film "Anatomie," became a top-20 hit, and she toured under the title "Aus der Sicht und mit den Worten von…-Tour" in January 2000.
The 2003 album "Sabs" reached number eleven on the German charts and produced the singles "Ich bin so," "Liebe," "Baby," and "Mein Herz." Setlur gained additional attention through participation in the German Eurovision Song Contest preselection and the fourth season of the casting show "Popstars," followed by the release of her best-of collection "10 Jahre." Her sixth album, "Rot," was released on August 24, 2007, with the lead single "Lauta," based on "25 Years" by The Catch (1983), released as a maxi single on August 3, 2007. The second single, "I Think I Like It," featuring lyrics in English, German, and French, was released on November 9, 2007. Despite positive reviews, both the album and singles achieved lower commercial success than her earlier work.
In 2018, Setlur collaborated with Eko Fresh on a song for the soundtrack of the film "Verpiss dich, Schneewittchen." In summer 2025, she returned to the stage after 25 years, performing three concerts at the hip-hop festival "Old but Gold," accompanied by Faiz Mangat and Anna Grillmeier. In mid-August, she was featured on Illmatic’s single "Benjamins," contributing the hook.
