Mark Ernestus’ Ndagga Rhythm Force is a musical collaboration that bridges the Berlin dub-techno electronic scene with the traditional mbalax rhythms of Dakar, Senegal. Formed in 2014 by German electronic music pioneer Mark Ernestus (co-founder of Basic Channel and the Hard Wax record store), the project fuses skeletal electronic drum programming and synthesizers with dense, syncopated acoustic percussion and powerful Wolof vocals. Described as a "Dakar-Berlin nexus," the group explores minimalism and complex polyrhythms. Mark Ernestus provides precise drum edits, deep bass lines, and dub delays, utilizing his signature Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 synthesizer. The band highlights veteran Senegalese performers, led by the dramatic vocals of mbalax diva Mbene Diatta Seck and the frantic sabar/talking drum patterns of percussionists like Bada Seck. Outside of the studio, the group operates as an explosive, highly energetic touring act.
