The Police were an English rock band formed in London in 1977. The core line-up consisted of Sting (lead vocals, bass, primary songwriter), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums, percussion). Emerging from the British new wave scene, their music combined elements of punk rock, reggae and jazz. The group achieved international success from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s.

Their debut album, "Outlandos d'Amour" (1978), reached number six on the UK Albums Chart and included the singles "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You". The second album, "Reggatta de Blanc" (1979), became the first of four consecutive studio albums to reach number one in the United Kingdom and Australia. Its singles "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon" both reached number one in the UK. The subsequent albums "Zenyatta Mondatta" (1980) and "Ghost in the Machine" (1981) further expanded the band's international profile. Songs such as "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" topped the UK Singles Chart and achieved high chart positions in several other countries. "Zenyatta Mondatta" also marked a significant breakthrough in the United States, reaching number five on the Billboard 200.

The band's final studio album, "Synchronicity" (1983), reached number one in multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and Italy. It sold more than eight million copies in the United States alone. The lead single, "Every Breath You Take", became the group's fifth UK number-one single and their only number-one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100. During this period, the Police were associated with the so-called Second British Invasion, a wave of British acts achieving success in the United States in the early 1980s. The band disbanded in 1984 at the height of their popularity, though they later reunited for occasional performances. A full-scale reunion tour took place from 2007 to 2008 and was among the highest-grossing tours of that period.

The Police have sold more than 75 million records worldwide and are regarded as one of the best-selling music artists. Over the course of their career, they received numerous awards, including six Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards and an MTV Video Music Award. In 2003, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Several of their studio albums were included in Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time", and the band has appeared in lists of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" published by Rolling Stone and VH1.
