Marter

Marter has been played on NTS in shows including From Sun City, featured first on 12 October 2017. Songs played include All These Years and Waiting For My Lady.

Marter, the pseudonym of Masateru Yamauchi (山内将輝) who was born in Tokyo, Japan, where he lived until he moved to Los Angeles, California at the age of 14. He attended Berklee College in Boston to study music, and moved back to Japan upon graduating to start his music career. He played gigs with multiple bands as a bassist and a singer, while also releasing 2 albums, Tsuki no Desio and Preferable Reality. After moving to Berlin and living there for 2 years, he released his first album as Marter, Weltraumästhetik, in 2009. At Berklee college he had been in the Gospel choir, and it was there that he met his mentor, Dennis Montgomery III, who introduced him to the world of gospel and R&B soul. It was this inspirational source, combined with his exposure to techno and drum and bass raves in London, that led to the creation of Marter. Combining slick beats along the lines of J Dilla with vocals eerily similar to that of Seal, Marter released a second album, Finding & Searching, in 2012.
