She began her career in the early 1960s as the lead singer of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. After the group was renamed Labelle in the 1970s, they achieved a US number-one single with "Lady Marmalade". Following the group’s disbandment in 1977, LaBelle pursued a solo career and attained mainstream success during the 1980s with songs including "If Only You Knew", "New Attitude" and "Stir It Up". In 1986, she reached number one on the US album chart with "Winner in You" and recorded the US number-one single "On My Own", a duet with Michael McDonald. She won a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1992 for "Burnin'" and a second Grammy Award in 1999 for "Live! One Night Only". She reunited with Labelle in 2008 for the album "Back to Now".

In addition to her music career, LaBelle has appeared in film and television. She had a role in the film "A Soldier's Story" and appeared in television series including "A Different World" and "American Horror Story: Freak Show". In 1992, she starred in the sitcom "Out All Night", and in 2002 she hosted the lifestyle programme "Living It Up with Patti LaBelle" on TV One. In 2015, she participated in the television competition "Dancing with the Stars". She has also licensed her name to a range of products, including bedding, cookbooks and food items, notably "Patti's Sweet Potato Pie", which gained widespread attention following a viral online video in 2015.

Over a career spanning seven decades, LaBelle has sold more than 50 million records worldwide. She has been inducted into several halls of fame, including the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame and the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame.
