Leslie Sebastian Charles (born 21 January 1950), known professionally as Billy Ocean, is a Trinidadian-British singer and songwriter. Between 1976 and 1988, he achieved international success with a series of hit singles in the UK and abroad. He is known for songs such as "Love Really Hurts Without You" (1976), "Red Light Spells Danger" (1977), "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)" (1984), "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going" (1985), "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)" (1985), and "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car" (1988). "Caribbean Queen" reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and won the 1985 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Ocean was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to music.

Ocean was born in Fyzabad, Trinidad and Tobago, to Violet and Hainsley Charles, a Grenadian musician. He moved to Romford, Essex, England, at the age of 10. While working as a tailor on Savile Row in London, he performed regularly in a nightclub. He began his career with local bands including the Shades of Midnight and Dry Ice, and later fronted a studio band called Scorched Earth. His early singles included "Nashville Rain" (1971), "Sun in the Morning" (1971), "On The Run" (1974), and "Super Woman, Super Lover" (1974). The origin of his stage name is associated with a football team from his hometown in Trinidad and Tobago called "Oceans 11".

Between 1976 and 1982, Ocean released four studio albums: "Billy Ocean" (1976), "City Limit" (1980), "Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)" (1981), and "Inner Feelings" (1982), with "Love Really Hurts Without You" achieving chart success. Following Sony Music's acquisition of GTO Records, Ocean was transferred to Jive Records, where he experienced a renewed commercial breakthrough in the 1980s. His fifth studio album, "Suddenly" (1984), included the hit single "Caribbean Queen", which reached number one in the U.S. and contributed to the album reaching the top ten in both the U.S. and UK. Ocean also collaborated with Scott Walker on the 1984 album "Climate of Hunter".

The 1986 album "Love Zone" produced the singles "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going" and "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)", which charted in the UK and U.S., and earned Ocean a Grammy nomination. Ocean's music video for "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going" was temporarily banned by the BBC due to appearances by non-union actors. He received a nomination for the Brit Award for Best British Male Artist in 1987. "Tear Down These Walls" (1988) featured the single "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car" and was certified platinum.

Later in his career, Ocean released the album "Time to Move On" (1993), while compilation albums such as "Greatest Hits" (1989) and "L.I.F.E. – Love Is for Ever" (1997) performed well on the UK Albums Chart. He received an honorary doctorate of music from the University of Westminster in 2002 and has continued to tour and record in Europe. Subsequent releases include "Because I Love You" (2009) and "One World" (2020). Ocean has made appearances in film, including "Keith Lemon: The Film" (2012), and has performed on television programs such as "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" in 2016. He has toured the UK and internationally throughout his career and has been recognised with awards including the MOBO Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 and a Companion of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts in 2011.
