Wreck And Reference

Wreck And Reference has been played on NTS in shows including Andrew Weatherall Presents: Music's Not For Everyone, featured first on 1 March 2018. Songs played include Heute Will Ich Frei Sein.

Wreck and Reference is an experimental / noise / drone / electronic project based in Los Angeles, California. Originally founded in Davis, California, they have since evolved into a duo that eschews traditional rock instrumentation in favor of synths, samples, and live percussion.

The current members are Felix Skinner and Ignat Frege (both vocals, production). A past member is Sam Chiang (guitar).

They first garnered attention with the EP Black Cassette (2011) and the full-length No Youth (2012). The 2013 EP No Content and the 2014 album Want pushed their sonic boundaries further. In 2016 they released Indifferent Rivers Romance End, followed by Absolute Still Life (2019). Their latest full-length, Stay Calm, was released on August 22, 2025, through The Flenser.

Wreck and Reference are often cited for inhabiting liminal spaces between noise, ambient, drone, and heavy experimental music. Their compositions embrace tension, contrast, electronic abstraction, visceral sound design, and a refusal of easy categorization.
