Hearts Of Soul

Hearts Of Soul was first played on NTS on 9 December 2018. Songs played include We Love The Policeman.

Hearts of Soul was a Dutch girl group formed by three sisters - Bianca, Stella and Patricia Maessen - from the town of Harderwijk, The Netherlands. Active from 1969 to 1981 and from 2010 onwards, they were perhaps best known for their song 'Waterman', which was the Dutch entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1970. Their biggest chart hit in The Netherlands, however, was 'Fat Jack' (penned by George Kooymans of Golden Earring), which hit #18 in 1969.

Please note that the names Hearts of Soul and The Hearts of Soul were both used on single sleeves and the like. The group's work is listed on streaming platforms under The Hearts of Soul. Here on Last.fm, however, Hearts of Soul is the most commonly used spelling of the name.

The three singing sisters were discovered in 1968 and spent some time recording as session singers for, among others, Dusty Springfield. They recorded a debut album, The Hearts of Soul, which came out in 1970. In that same year they took 'Waterman' (written by Pieter Goemans) to the Eurovision Song Contest. They finished 7th out of 12 participants. It didn't bring them much in terms of chart success of album sales. Disappointed by this fact they re-located to Belgium in 1974, re-naming their group Dream Express in 1975, with former Pebbles musician Luc Smets (who had married Bianca).

In the summer of 1976 they had a Flemish number #2 hit with the eponymous song, 'Dream Express'. On 5 February 1977 they won in the national finals for Belgium to enter the Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in London, United Kingdom, on Saturday 7 May. Dream Express was the first Belgian entry to sing in English. Their song 'A Million in One, Two, Three' finished 7th, out of 18 participating countries.

Dream Express changed its name again in 1979, briefly, to LBS: short for Luc, Bianca and Stella. Their singles 'LBS' and 'Uncle Jim' got considerable airplay in Belgium in 1979, but the group slowly petered out and had split up by 1981.

Stella started releasing singles under the name Stella Mason. She represented Belgium, singing in French, at the Eurovision Song Contest of 1982 (her third performance in total, for two different nations), with the song 'Si tu aimes ma musique'. On 24 April 1982 she finished 4th out of 18 contestants.

Bianca released several singles between 1981 and 1993. Patricia, finally, sang at two more editions of the Eurovision Song Contest as a backing singer: for Sandra Kim's winning entry 'J'aime la vie' in 1986 and for Plastic Bertrand's Luxembourg entry in 1987. Patricia tragically died on 15 May 1996, aged just 44.

Having re-located to The Netherlands in 2010, Stella and Bianca reformed their group under the old name, Hearts of Soul, with their younger sister Doreen Maessen taking Patricia's place. They are still performing, especially in the southern parts of The Netherlands.
