Kim Petras is a German singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles. She first gained international attention due to her early gender transition and subsequent media coverage as a teenager. She released her debut EP, One Piece of Tape, in 2011 and later worked as a songwriter for artists including Fergie, JoJo, Skylar Stecker, and Twice. Her debut single, I Don't Want It at All, was released in August 2017, followed by Heart to Break,in 2018, which reached number 52 on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. She began identifying as female at a very young age and started hormone therapy at age 12. She also began writing music in her early teens, teaching herself English through online media and producing early songs using GarageBand. During adolescence, she appeared in German media discussing her gender transition and seeking access to gender-affirming surgery at an early age, which drew international attention at the time.

While still in school, Petras visited recording studios and produced demo material, leading to a publishing deal with Universal Music Germany during her teenage years. She later moved to Los Angeles at age 19, where she initially lived in the garage of a music producer while continuing to develop her songwriting career.
