Jarvis Branson Cocker (born 19 September 1963) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. He is best known as the founder, lead vocalist and principal lyricist of the band Pulp, and remained its only constant member throughout the group’s history. During the mid-1990s he became widely associated with the Britpop movement. In addition to his work with Pulp, Cocker has released solo music and presented the BBC Radio 6 Music programme "Jarvis Cocker’s Sunday Service" for seven years.

Cocker was born and raised in Sheffield, England, and attended City School. His father, Mac Cocker, worked as a DJ and actor and moved to Sydney, Australia when Jarvis was seven years old. After his departure, Cocker and his sister Saskia were raised by their mother, Christine Connolly, who later served as a Conservative councillor. During the 1970s and 1980s Mac Cocker worked as a radio DJ in Sydney with the station Double J, which was later renamed Triple J.

Cocker later addressed his father’s absence in the song "A Little Soul", from the Pulp album "This Is Hardcore". In 1998 he and his sister travelled to Australia and met their father again for the first time in nearly thirty years. Cocker later stated that he had forgiven his father, who died in 2016.

During much of the 1980s Cocker lived on unemployment benefits and for a period resided in a disused factory building. In his twenties he also spent time squatting in London.
