NTS Guide to: Music of Afghanistan

A brief two-hour window into the unfathomably rich and storied music of Afghanistan – a musical heritage which reflects the country’s unique geographical position and status as a central point in a melting pot of cultures. The show mostly features recordings from before the outbreak of Afghanistan’s civil war in 1979, or by Afghans living in exile. Music was banned under the Taliban’s initial rule, and since their return to power in 2022, Afghanistan is once again silent.

Electronica Ambient Minimalism

A multi-hyphenate and pioneer in the truest senses of both terms, Laurie Spiegel's work resides at a dizzying intersection of disciplines – software programming, analog and digital sound synthesis, classical-school music composition, computer graphic design. She was also involved in many of these disciplines at, or close to, their genesis.

Her music, in many ways a distillation of the above interests, is expansive and exploratory.
