NTS Guide To: Zamrock

Zambian rock or "Zamrock" (a portmanteau coined by DJ Manasseh Phiri) was one of the first Western pop-influenced music movements to emerge on the African continent, beginning almost instantly following the country's independence in the mid 1960s.

Gathering inspiration from James Brown, The Who, and other rock and funk greats of the era, Zambian bands like WITCH, Amanaz and others unleashed an unbridled DIY and rough rock sound that appears totally timeless.
