The Orquestra Sinfônica Do Estado De São Paulo (OSESP) was founded in 1954, but it was in the 1970s that it really came into its own. Since the appointment of John Neschling as artistic director, great efforts have been made to build up a world-class symphony orchestra. A major Step in achieving this was the move to newly renovated premises in 1999. Each year the orchestra prepares approximately 40 different programs, performing an average of 90 concerts in the Sala São Paulo and at venues in other Brazilian cities. The distinctive trademark of OSESP is its concern with the repertoire. Alongside established works from the Western repertoire – from Vivaldi and Haydn to Britten as well as cycles of symphonies by Schumann, Shostakovich and Mahler, for example- contemporary international and Brazilian works are also regularly presented. Approximately 20 works by Brazilian composers are performed each year. The OSESP is much more than just a symphonic organization. It is the center of a complete musical project which includes the Symphonic Chorus, the Chamber Chorus and the Youth and Children's Choruses. The orchestra's Music Documentation Centre is not only one of the most complete musical Archives in Brazil today but also a source for research and study. The orchestra has also set up a music editing office which is helping to preserve the vast heritage of Brazilian music by putting manuscripts in to more lasting forms and thus making them more readily available for performance.
