Drifting into a new day with Maria Somerville, live from Ireland's wild west coast.
Panamanian Soul emerged during a turbulent time in the country’s history—the 1960s and early 1970s. During the construction of the Panama Canal between 1904 and 1914, Afro-Caribbean laborers were brought in from British colonies such as Jamaica and Barbados. After the Canal was completed, these workers and their descendants faced exclusion and racism within Panamanian society. By the 1960s, the global wave of civil rights movements had not gone unnoticed. Many Panamanians were exposed to the U.S. Black freedom struggle through contact with American G.I.s stationed at U.S. military bases. The voices of Marvin Gaye, James Brown, and Otis Redding, broadcast over Army Radio, also left a lasting impression. Inspired by this cultural exchange, many descendants of the canal laborers began forging their own unique Soul sound.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Neako grew up in the infamous "Hoodaville" section of the city. "Growing up in Newark as a kid, you’re just trying to live." says Neako about his upbringing. At the age of thirteen Neako was introduced to creating music and he has not stopped since. After being thrust into a neigborhood cypher, Neako knew then and there that he wanted to become a rapper.
His “Rubix Cube” mixtape series (Red Edition, Green Edition, and most recently Blue Edition) have earned him appearances on Sirius/XM Radio, New York’s Hot 97, MTV Germany, and coverage on popular hip-hop websites NahRight, 2DopeBoyz, OnSmash, and many more. Neako has collaborated with artists such as Wiz Khalifa, Young Chris, as well as rap legend Bun B.
"I love being a new artist, I get motivation from my peers and I know what I'm doing motivates them as well. We are all in this friendly competition to make each other better and this is what hip-hop is about".
Neako is not just an artist behind the mic, but he is a self made producer as well. Producing a vast amount of his own tracks himself, Neako has begun to create a unique sound that people love. "One of my greatest advantages is being a producer as well as a rapper. If I know what I need sonically then I can go in the studio and create it, and I am always striving to get better in all aspects of music."
