Lois Lane

Lois Lane has been played on NTS in shows including The Windmills of Your Mind w/ Taylor Rowley, featured first on 2 June 2022. Songs played include Once Upon A Time.

Loïs Lane is a Dutch pop group based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, with two sisters at its core: Monique Klemann (1965) and Suzanne Klemann (1963).

The name of the group is consistently spelled as Loïs Lane on their albums (and therefore the preferred spelling), but they are listed as Lois Lane on streaming platforms such as Spotify. Lois Lane is therefore the most commonly used spelling here on Last.fm. Hopefully, one day, Loïs Lane and Lois Lane can be merged. In the United States, meanwhile, they were forced to abandon the band name, due to copyright infringement on the name of Superman's girlfriend. In the U.S. they are known as Lois L.

The group was founded in 1984 by Monique. However, background singer Angela left the group in 1985 . She was replaced by her sister Suzanne. October 1985 marks the start of Loïs Lane proper.

In 1987 they participated in the Grote Prijs van Nederland, Holland's number one band contest, and were offered a record deal by Warner's. In 1988 they recorded the title song 'Amsterdamned' for the movie of the same name which resulted in their first moderate success. Yet, the record label dropped them and they started their own imprint, Lana Lane.

After this first exposure, they recorded their debut album, Loïs Lane (1989), which became an overnight success, peaking at #1 in the Dutch album charts after the success of their second single, 'It's The First Time', which was a Dutch summer hit in 1989. This song came to the attention of Prince, who became interested in the sisters.

Sophomore album, Fortune Fairytales (1990), repeated the succes, peaking at #4 and achieving platinum status in The Netherlands. The title song became Loïs Lane's highest charting single ever: #6 in the Dutch Top 40.

Prince, who had kept an eye on the sisters, now stepped forward, personally inviting Loïs Lane to open for him on his 1990 Nude world tour. Prince then produced the third Loïs Lane album, Precious (1992), which became a bittersweet highlight for the Klemann sisters: it introduced them to a North American audience and they enjoyed moderate stateside success with their singles 'Sex' and 'Qualified', but their 'big break' never materialized. Meanwhile, the album fared poorly at home.

Loïs Lane resurrected with the album Fireflight (1995), featured the single 'Tonight', which marked their return to the Dutch Top 10.

Loïs Lane never repeated the commercial success of the 1989-1995, but never officially quit, resurfacing with new studio albums in 2000 (Hear Me Out) and 2013 (As One) - and performing live, especially around their anniversaries in 2005, 2010, 2020 and 2025. A new studio album is set for 2025, marking the Klemann sisters' 40th anniversary as Loïs Lane.
