'Somewhere along the line Coltrane’s soprano sax runs out of steam. Now it’s McCoy Tyner’s piano solo I hear, the left hand carving out a repetitious rhythm and the right layering on thick, forbidding chords. Like some mythic scene, the music portrays somebody’s - a nameless, faceless somebody’s - dim past, all the details laid out as clearly as entrails being dragged out of the darkness. Or at least that’s how it sounds to me. The patient, repeating music ever so slowly breaks apart the real, rearranging the pieces. It has a hypnotic, menacing smell, just like the forest' - Kafka On The Shore Music, and specifically jazz, has always featured heavily in the literary imagination of Haruki Murakami. In this radio special, NTS lays down two hours of jazz records as featured throughout Murakami's corpus.

DJ, artist and techno impresario, Word of Command welds fevered collage and high-octane techno into a hallucinatory dreamscape. He is the founder of FIST (@funisstilltransgressive), a queer techno party that pays tribute to radical fun, while engaging the visibility of communities of otherness through techno in NYC.

Flaming Hands

Flaming Hands

Flaming Hands has been played on NTS in shows including Gabi, featured first on 25 July 2022. Songs played include I Belong To Nobody.

Flaming Hands were an early 80s pop band from Sydney, Australia. The band's principal members were singer Julie Mostyn and songwriter/guitarist Jeff Sullivan, who together delivered a handful of singles and one LP.

The band released their first single - I Belong to Nobody / The Stranger - on Phantom Records in 1980. They followed it up with four more singles - Wake Up Screaming / Sweet Revenge, It's Just That I Miss You / Go Or Stay, Cast My Love / Kismet and The Edge / Sacrifice. These singles were marked by an earthier sound than what Flaming Hands would be producing by the time they released their first and only full-length album in 1984. The self-titled LP, which featured Andrew Fariss and Kirk Pengilly from INXS, failed to garner the band much recognition, leading Sullivan and Mostyn to dissolve the group.
