International Music is a German rock band founded in Essen in 2015. The trio consists of Peter Rubel (guitar, keyboard, vocals), Pedro Goncalves Crescenti (bass, vocals), and Joel Roters (drums). Rubel pursued composition at the Folkwang University of the Arts, Crescenti studied German and English at Ruhr University Bochum, and Roters, a visual artist, took up drumming with the formation of the band. The band began performing publicly in 2016 and released their debut EP, Mein Schweiss, on SoundCloud, followed by a cassette release in March 2017. Peter Rubel and Pedro Goncalves Crescenti, who have been making music together since 2006, also lead another project, The Düsseldorf Düsterboys, which explores psychedelic folk, lo-fi, and indie pop. Their debut album, Nenn mich Musik, was released in October 2019. International Music's debut album, Die besten Jahre, was released on April 27, 2018, by the Berlin indie label Staatsakt. This 80-minute double album received universal acclaim from critics. Musikexpress described the band's style as an eclectic blend of genres, while ByteFM characterized it as a "dense web of laconicism, melancholy, psychedelia, and post-punk," engaging listeners deeply. Zündfunk compared their lyrics to those of Andreas Spechtl from Ja, Panik, noting influences from FSK, La Düsseldorf, and Velvet Underground. Laut.de awarded the debut album the highest rating, praising its emotional resonance. In 2018, International Music was honored with the popNRW prize for Best Newcomer. Die besten Jahre topped the Musikexpress annual album charts and was ranked 36th on their list of the 100 greatest German albums of all time. The band's distinctive sound earned them the Nachwuchspreis (Newcomer Award) at the Deutscher Musikautorenpreis in 2020. Their second studio album, Ententraum, was released on April 23, 2021, also as a double album via Staatsakt. The album was well-received, with Musikexpress giving it the highest rating. Ententraum expanded their musical repertoire with influences from New Wave, Tropicalismo, and Progressive Rock, and it entered the German album charts at number 13. It was ranked second in the annual charts of Laut.de, Musikexpress, and ByteFM. On September 6, 2024, International Music will release their third studio album, Endless Rüttenscheid, through their newly established label, Timeless Melancholic Music, with The Orchard as the distributor. This album will be their shortest to date, at 41 minutes, and will not be a double album. The title references the Rüttenscheid district in Essen, and the first single, Liebesformular, was released on May 17, 2024.
