If you ever need some creative inspiration, take a look at some videos of Timbaland in the studio in his prime, around the early to mid-2000s. You'll see Timbo smiling knowingly as he plays new material to some of the biggest rap & R&B stars of all time, all of whom appear to display a similar range of emotions – confusion, astonishment, befuddled laughter. This is testament to the Virginia producer's utterly genre shifting approach to the rhythm and texture of beat-making. No one sounded like him before, and the many who have imitated rarely reach his level. This In Focus is selected by Antonine Scali.

Deepfried Toguma

Deepfried Toguma

Deepfried Toguma has been played on NTS shows including The Early Bird Show w/ Jack Rollo, with Mellow Pitbull first played on 3 May 2024.

Danish-Spanish ambient trio formed in Copenhagen late 1995 by flamenco singer Gustav Carl Rey Henningsen Jr., guitarist Moe Lind and guitarist and programmer Frithjof Toksvig. All three had spectacular musical backgrounds: The part-Spanish Gustav Jr. had fronted numerous flamenco combos in both Sweden and Denmark, Moe Lind had played with grunge act Boghandle and punk legend Sort Sol, and Frithjof Toksvig had been part of the highly ambitious, but ill fated art-pop group, The Poets (originally Poets Of The Signature, in the US and Canada known as The Sealand Poets). And at the time Deepfried Toguma was definately something else than the usual stuff going on - this dreamy combination of Spanish lyrics, guitar improvisations and ambient flows and beats. The trio contributed tracks to various samplers in the late Nineties, especially in the UK, as well as they released two albums, "Subtic" and "The Hi-Fi Companion". The group never formally disbanded itself, but there is no doubt that Deepfried Toguma is not active any longer.

Frithjof Toksvig went on, forming his own solo project, Ekko, and working as a producer, remixer and musician for acts like Swan Lee and Mikael Simpson and his backing group Sølvstorm - plus he has made quite a name for himself as a filmscore composer in the golden age of Danish film, the so-called Dogma era beginning in the late Nineties.
