Grant Chapman is a rising name in New York’s leftfield music community. Restlessness (paired with a distaste for the “press play on a laptop” style of live performance) led Chapman to a complete upending of his creative process. Rather than stitching together samples digitally, he loaded a vast library of one-shot samples onto a digital drum pad and began assembling songs in a tactile, collage-esque way. Constructed entirely from found samples, the world of his new solo album Angel Smile is as synthetic as it is organic, as familiar as it is alien, as structured as it is amorphous, as lonely as it is uplifting.
