Splinter Orchestra are a diverse assemblage of NSW-based musicians and sound artists with an interest in group improvisational processes. They have been described as "one of the few large-scale improvisational ensembles working in Australia, or anywhere else for that matter… The group aims for graceful tension, restraint and simplicity. They are intent on becoming one instrument…"
The 'ecology' of the group is controlled by a preference for small sounds and a gradual, 'evolutionary' pace of musical development. The ideal of free improvisation without a leader and within an ethos of quiet, respectful listening suggests an ethical interest in ecological balance between individuals - a quietistic 'live and let live' philosophy.
Whatever the associations of the sounds involved, Splinter Orchestra's music seems to focus the listener on the details of sounds and sound combinations. At times it is almost as though we are hearing the sounds in the same way as we would look at organisms through a microscope.
