Günter Christmann (* 29 November 1942 in Schrimm) is a German free jazz trombonist, bassist, cellist as well as composer and multimedia dramaturge.

Christmann has played in the international free jazz scene since the late 1960s, was a member of Rüdiger Carl's and Peter Kowald's ensembles as a trombonist, among others, worked for a long time in a duo with the drummer Detlef Schönenberg and from 1973 to 1986 in the Globe Unity Orchestra. In the early 1970s, he made his first recordings for the free jazz label FMP. Later he also played with Maarten Altena and Michel Waisvisz. In 1979 he founded the Vario project, which still exists today, an improvisation ensemble with varying line-ups, including Phil Minton, Maggie Nicols, Sven-Åke Johansson, Christian Munthe, Thomas Lehn, Alexander Frangenheim and Axel Dörner. From 1987 to 1994 he was a member of Wolfgang Fuchs' King Übü Orchestra. Under the name Carte Blanche he performed with bassist Torsten Müller. Christmann is also active as a dramaturge in the field of music theatre, especially dance theatre, (with Pina Bausch and Elisabeth Clark, among others), with multimedia forms of presentation and with experimental music films.

Christmann spielte seit Ende der 1960er Jahre in der internationalen Free Jazz-Szene, war als Posaunist u.a. Mitglied der Ensembles von Rüdiger Carl und Peter Kowald, arbeitete längere Zeit im Duo mit dem Schlagzeuger Detlef Schönenberg und von 1973 bis 1986 im Globe Unity Orchestra. In den frühen 1970er Jahren entstanden erste Aufnahmen für das Freejazzlabel FMP. Später spielte er auch mit Maarten Altena und Michel Waisvisz. 1979 gründete er das bis heute bestehende Projekt Vario, ein Improvisationsensemble in wechselnden Besetzungen, u.a. mit Phil Minton, Maggie Nicols, Sven-Åke Johansson, Christian Munthe, Thomas Lehn, Alexander Frangenheim, Axel Dörner. Von 1987 bis 1994 war er Mitglied in Wolfgang Fuchs´ King Übü Orchestra. Unter dem Namen Carte Blanche trat er mit Bassist Torsten Müller auf. Christmann betätigt sich auch als Dramaturg auf dem Gebiet des Musiktheaters, besonders des Tanztheaters, (u.a mit Pina Bausch und Elisabeth Clark), mit multimedialen Darstellungsformen sowie mit experimentellen Musikfilmen.
