Gary Young

Gary Young has been played on NTS in shows including The Windmills of Your Mind w/ Taylor Rowley, featured first on 5 October 2023. Songs played include Moonlight (Based on Claude Debussy's "Au Clair de Lune").

Gary Young (May 3, 1953 – August 17, 2023, born in Mamaroneck, New York) was an alternative rock musician who was the original drummer for the band Pavement. He played on the classic debut "Slanted and Enchanted."

During the band's initial period in 1989, Young, then in his mid-thirties, had singer-guitarists Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg record at his in-home Stockton, California studio, "Louder Than You Think". A multi-instrumentalist, Young sat in as their drummer. Within the span of three years, the band released three EPs and an LP; "Slay Tracks (1933-1969)", "Demolition Plot J-7", "Perfect Sound Forever", and their debut album, "Slanted and Enchanted". By 1992, other members were brought in to make Pavement a full-fledged band.

The next year, it was clear that Young's stage persona, which included doing handstands, drunkenly falling off his drum stool, and running around the venue during performances, handing out vegetables and mashed potatoes to audiences, was taking a toll on the band. Young was politely asked if he'd step down.

In 1994, Young released his debut solo album, "Hospital", featuring the fan-favorite initial single, "Plant Man". Two more albums followed until 1999. "Malfunction" EP was released in 2016. Recently before his 2023 death at age 70, Young released a folk trio album entitled: "I've Got a Secret" in 2022.
