Walter Boeykens (Bornem, Belgium 1938) is a contemporary Belgian conductor and clarinetist.

Boeykens studied at the Royal Music Academy in Brussels. In 1965, he was laureate of the international festival of contemporary music in Utrecht.
From 1964 up to 1984 he was solo clarinettist in BRT Philharmonic Orchestra. After he left in 1984, his career has taken off. He was invited by the organizers of large European music festivals, including Berlin, Paris, Warsaw, Madrid, Salzburg, Wallonia and naturally the festival of Flanders. Furthermore he performed as a soloist in Israel, the United States, Venezuela, Japan, Korea among others.
On 20 December 1968 performed the world première of Domaines for clarinet and orchestra by Pierre Boulez with BRT Filharmonisch orchestra under the direction of the composer. He played further under eminent conductors such as Charles Munch, Rafael Frübeck de Burgos, Gary Bertini, Leonard Bernstein, James Conlon, and others.
In 1969, Boeykens were appointed as professor to the Royal Flemish Academy in Antwerp, where he founded the Boeykens Clarinet Choir 1981. In 1972, he became docent to the Académie International d'Été the Nice. He is also a visiting Professor at the academies of Utrecht, Rotterdam and the Fontys academy in Tilburg. Also he taught at the Cité de la Musique and to the Scuola di alto Perfezionamente Musicale in Turin. His daughter Anne Boeykens has followed her father's foot steps and learned to play clarinet from him.
As conductor Boeykens lead the Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders, the Brabantine Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Belgium and the Orchestra Filharmonica di Torino. He was in later years also conductor of the Harmonieorkest "Saint Michaël", at Thorn. With his own ensemble he has many roles and it has made a number of CDs.
Boeykens has many prizes including the 1988 the fifth Prudens Van Duyse prize and the special culture prize of the municipality Bornem in 1995. He has been a cultural ambassador of Flanders since 1995. In 1996, had received [an award] from the Flemish government. King Albert II knighted Boeykens in 1997, in recognition of his musical career.
