Anthony Manning

Anthony Manning has been played on NTS in shows including TWO WAY DREAMING, featured first on 25 March 2016. Songs played include Untitled, Elastic Variations I and Concision (Anthony's Original).

Anthony Manning released several electronic works on the Irdial and germstore labels during the mid 90's to some acclaim, a little derision, but mostly bemusement.

His works are well-described as modern classical, and are occasionally described as being influential. This generally means that they did not sell, but are looked upon as works that find favour amongst the artist's peers. You would not think so by listening to the majority of output from the bleeping community either then or now, which means that the influence had limited reach.

This is not to say that the music is without merit, simply that it inhabits a rarified, esoteric land that few feel truly comfortable wandering through.

If there is a theme that runs through his output, it is a strong disregard for the conventions of the electronica movement -- despite sharing a sonic pallette much in common with "ambient techno" of the mid-90's (a movement which undoubtedly assisted notice of his work, along with release on the influential Irdial label), his refusal to work within a two-note four-four structure, combined with his sophisticated & challenging arrangements marks him as a composer of note within the wider, dancefloor-focussed techno community.
