The Angelic Process was an American drone metal duo formed in 1999 in Georgia. Initially a solo project by Kris Angylus (Kristopher Fairchild), the band became a husband-and-wife collaboration when Monica Dragynfly (Monica Henson) joined on bass and backing vocals in 2005. Pioneers of the ambient drone metal subgenre, The Angelic Process forged a distinctive sound that fused layered guitar drone, shoegaze textures, and complex time signatures with haunting dual vocals.
The band released their debut album …and Your Blood Is Full of Honey in 2001, followed by Coma Waering (2003), a concept album about a man who falls into a coma and dies, inspired by the 2000 death of Angylus's first girlfriend in a car crash. After Monica joined the band, they began performing live in January 2006 and released two EPs: Sigh and We All Die Laughing (both 2006). Their final album, Weighing Souls With Sand (2007), continued the narrative of Coma Waering, focusing on the widow's grief and eventual suicide.
The Angelic Process was known for immersive live performances combining blasting noise, droning guitar resonance, martial percussion, and ethereal vocals into what has been described as "the sound of the soul." In October 2007, the band entered an indefinite hiatus after Angylus suffered a severe hand injury. On April 26, 2008, Kris Angylus died by suicide. Monica Henson passed away on April 1, 2023.
The band's influence on post-metal and drone metal remains significant, with their atmospheric approach and emotional intensity inspiring numerous artists in extreme and experimental music.
