Mark Steven Brooks was born in New York City in 1955. He studied composition with Lejaren Hiller, Elias Tannenbaum and Ursula Mamlok among others and earned a B.M. in composition from the Manhattan School of Music and M.A. in music from Wesleyan University. He has composed over 100 works for a variety of media including non-western instruments and electronics and his music has been heard throughout the world. Brooks has recorded for the Tzadik, Folkways, GSOL, Strangemusic, XI, Unit and Elaterium record labels.
Musical influences include: Karlheinz Stockhausen, Captain Beefheart, Christian Wolff, James Brown, Frank Zappa, Anton Webern, Charles Ives, Syd Barrett, The Hafler Trio, Jimi Hendrix, the musics of North India, Japan and Bali, Western music before Bach, The Rolling Stones, John Fahey, etc. etc.
