Who is YBP? The better question is what is YBP. Young Black Preachers is not just a group or a name but it is a movement. To understand what YBP is u have to know the influences of the group and the history of the members. Young Black Preachers is made up of, Jeremy Irving (JaeR), and brothers Tre Smith, and Aaron Butler (Projeck), who’s individual influences string from hip hop, jazz, punk rock, house, dance, world music and visual art. YBP is not a religious movement nor is it merely a run of the mill rap group. This three young men all grew up on the south side of Chicago and formed YBP as an idea to help fight against the continuing outburst of gang violence, and political and religious corruption in Chicago, through music and community work. Also using a dash of comedy and a spoonful of theatrics to keep it fresh.

All three members were raised early on in the church, and band member JaeR’s grandfather was a well-known clergyman and community leader who had served as pastor of great Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Chicago since 1968. This made them very spiritually aware but not very religious. Combining social issues to the ongoing worldwide economic crisis, and the misguided policies that most of this world’s governments subscribe to, tied to their own personal situations, give’s their music deep emotion and transparency. So that it is clear, they call themselves the Young Black Preachers because a preacher’s main goal is to teach and to implant positive messages in the youth of the world. They feel as if the world is already filled with tons of negative ideas that flood the airwaves. They are one of the growing number of visionaries or “preachers” to the world that are very tired of the old world way of thinking and they want to be one of the first to usher in this new wave of consciousness.
