Mary-Anne Paterson was born and raised in the Festival city of Edinburgh, Scotland. She studied drama at college and eventually became a drama teacher, occasionally writing songs for educational television. While struggling to set up an arts centre for children, Mary-Anne recorded an LP entitled "Me" in 1970 to help fund the costs.
