The original lineup included Dale Bozzio (vocals), Warren Cuccurullo (guitar), Terry Bozzio (drums), Patrick O'Hearn (bass), and Chuck Wild (keyboards). The band's distinctive sound emerged from their background as members of Frank Zappa's band, where Dale and Terry Bozzio first met and later married.

Missing Persons gained popularity in the early 1980s with their debut album, Spring Session M (1982), which featured hits like Destination Unknown, Words, and Walking in L.A. The album was notable for its innovative sound and was certified gold, selling over 500,000 copies. Their music videos were also popular on MTV due to their unique visual effects.

The band initially disbanded in 1986 but reunited several times over the years. Notable reunions occurred in 2001-2003 and again in 2011. During these periods, they released new music and performed live, although the lineup changed frequently. In 2023, Missing Persons released Hollywood Lie, their first album of original material in 37 years.

In June 2024, Missing Persons announced the release of a live album titled Live In Santa Clarita, CA – October 10, 1982, capturing a performance from their peak years. This release aims to reconnect with both old fans and new audiences by showcasing their energetic live performances from the early '80s.

As of now, Dale Bozzio continues to lead the band, keeping the spirit of Missing Persons alive through various performances and recordings. The band remains a significant part of the new wave genre's legacy.
