Born in Addis Ababa in 1923, Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru (Yewubdar Gebru) was raised in a prominent Ethiopian family and received musical training in Switzerland, Egypt, and Ethiopia. Her early life was marked by both privilege and upheaval, including imprisonment and exile during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia.

A pianist, composer, and Ethiopian Orthodox nun, Emahoy released her first recordings in 1963, with later albums supporting charitable and religious causes. After leaving Ethiopia in 1984, she settled in Jerusalem, where she continued composing and living a life devoted to faith and music.

International recognition of her work grew in the twenty-first century, particularly following the release of Ethiopiques 21 in 2006. Emahoy passed away in 2023 at the age of 99, leaving behind a remarkable musical legacy that continues to inspire audiences worldwide through ongoing recordings, performances, and the work of the Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music Foundation.
