Sadaf

Sadaf has been played over 10 times on NTS, first on 17 April 2017. Sadaf's music has been featured on 9 episodes.

A multidisciplinary talent, Sadaf H. Nava is a producer, violinist, vocalist, DJ, and performance artist. As SADAF, she combines these elements into abrasive yet hypnotic music that deals with constraint, anxiety, and body imagery as it incorporates industrial noise, free jazz, reggaeton, and Middle Eastern music with her gripping vocal improvisations. Born in Iran and raised in Canada, Nava began making art as a toddler, starting with drawing and moving into painting and sculpture as she grew up. After graduating from art school, she didn't have the funds for a studio, so she turned to performance art because of its more immediate and political nature. She began performing while in Montreal, and the city's noise and D.I.Y. scenes allowed her to embrace the spontaneity and imperfection that years of childhood violin lessons had crushed.

Nava studied performance at NYU, and established herself in New York's art and music worlds as she performed DJ sets at a wide array of clubs and museums and performed a series of shows with Arto Lindsay. Her debut single, "C.F.C.," arrived in May 2014 on Hoss Records, and was co-produced by the label's owner, R. Mexico. "Man of Me" followed in 2015, and SADAF's biggest breakthrough came with 2016's "Stillness," a hectic mix of footwork, ragga, jungle, and found sounds that earned her wider acclaim. SADAF returned in March 2017 with the visual mixtape Drown It, and followed it a few weeks later with "Let It Burn," the lead track from her debut EP, Shell. A conceptual piece about a creatively blocked young filmmaker, it arrived via Outside Insight in August 2017. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
