Here's some background for the band supplied by frontman and guitarist, Leaford Copes.
Liberators was a new name for the group that was playing for years as The Velvet Shadow. I first went to play lead guitar for them in 1974 when their lead guitarist Melbourne West went to Jamaica on holiday. The lead singer Godfrey was my mate so in 1978 the rhythm guitarist decided to leave, they asked me if I would like to join and play rhythm guitar for them which I did.
In that period we were backing Tito Simon when he was appearing in the West Midlands. Through that connection we got the opportunity to record an LP.
The only thing we did not have was songs also no song writer, everyone start looking at me.
I was out of work at the time and had a guitar at home so I started to put some words together which did not make a lot of sense to me, but when I sang those songs to the rest of lads they seemed to like them, especially the drummer who sang backing on every song.
Soon after we recorded "Enemies Are Coming" in 1979 the Bass guitarist decided to return to Jamaica, we had no plans to replace him so we decide to call it a day. The album was done in a rush, we also lacked experience, so as soon as it sound like a record we were satisfied. If it was now it would be so much better.
The only good memory i have is those guys were the best guys i have ever played music with, they were so laid back they were actually lazy. I sing and play lead on most of the album. They were a great set of guys, feels good to know people listen to my songs
Thanks to Leaford for sending me this info.
