DARRELL is a Japanese metal band hailing from Nagoya, reformed from 藍-AI- in 2017. They are part of the loud kei subgenre of visual kei. The band's current lineup includes vocalist and guitarist Ai (藍), bassist JOKER, and drummer Makoto (真), with past members including guitarists Jun (潤) and MIYA.
Following DEATHGAZE's hiatus announcement in 2014, vocalist Ai decided to pursue music further. He started out with a focus on solo work under the name 藍-AI-, but requests to perform live shows led him to search for supporting members. He enlisted drummer Makoto (真) from his hometown Nagoya, and bassist JOKER, who had previously worked as a roadie for DEATHGAZE. Ai found it challenging to find the right guitarist, so he played guitar himself. They discussed becoming a band once they got a guitarist.
They released the singles GLASS SKY and 鴉 (Karasu) in the end of 2015, and then the full album CONFUSION on April 20, 2016. After the singles RADIANCE and DESPAIR in 2016, Ai met up with guitarist Jun (潤) from Nagoya. Jun was in the band Butterfly Syndrome at the time, but decided to leave that band to join 藍-AI-.
With a complete lineup, they decided to reform the project as DARRELL, inspired by the name of former Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell. The band has jokingly said that depending on the situation, they might have taken the name from Lars Ulrich of Metallica, and it could have been LARS instead.
Their earlier works as 藍-AI- are all listed under their DARRELL discography. Ai has said in an interview that there is no clear distinction between DEATHGAZE, 藍-AI-, and DARRELL.
As DARRELL, their debut single "DEAD INSIDE" was released on July 19, 2017, followed by "QUINN" on November 29, 2017. They held their first oneman, titled "TOMORROW NEVER DIE," on December 29, 2017. Their debut album "DARXNESS" was released on July 25, 2018.
Continuing their musical journey, they released the single "DEVIL'Z" on July 3, 2019, and the maxi-single "HADES" on November 6, 2019. However, on November 10, 2019, guitarist Jun (潤) was kicked from the band due to a lack of communication and participation in rehearsals and interviews.
They released the single and best-of-collection "BRILLIANT DEATH" on June 1, 2020, and later welcomed guitarist MIYA from the band MEGIDO (メギド) as an official member on March 28, 2021.
Additional releases include the single "PHANTOM" on April 29, 2021, the maxi-single "THE CLOWDER" on July 14, 2021, and the best-of-collection "CLASSIX" on May 25, 2022. The single "INFERNO" was released on August 9, 2022.
Guitarist MIYA went on hiatus due to illness on October 22, 2022, and it was later announced on June 15, 2023, that he would be leaving the band after discussion since his return was not possible due to health reasons.
