Yochanan was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1972. He comes from a musical family, his mother and sister playing the piano and his brother the guitar and bass. At the age of 18 he borrowed a guitar from his uncle and began teaching himself rhythm and chords while also busking outside pubs and restaurants to keep afloat. He started jamming with his brother doing a kinda duo thing, all the while looking for a drummer who could put some groove in it.
