Maaya Sakamoto (坂本真綾) (born March 31, 1980 in Itabashi, Tokyo) is a Japanese singer-songwriter, voice actress, and lyricist whose career spans over three decades. She began working in dubbing and narration at age eight and made her breakthrough at sixteen as Hitomi Kanzaki in the anime The Vision of Escaflowne (1996). The series’ opening theme, “Yakusoku wa Iranai”, became her debut single and marked the beginning of a long collaboration with composer Yoko Kanno.
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Sakamoto and Kanno created a string of influential releases — including Grapefruit (1997), Dive (1998), and Lucy (2001) — that blended pop, jazz, and orchestral arrangements with introspective lyricism. After 2004 she began writing her own lyrics and collaborating with a wide range of composers, gradually developing a sound that shifted between pop, folk, and acoustic influences.
Her later albums — Yuunagi Loop (2005), You can't catch me (2011), Follow Me Up (2015), Kyo Dake no Ongaku (2019), and Kioku no Toshokan (2023) — showcase her evolution from an anime vocalist to a mature singer-songwriter. Her 2020 compilation Single Collection+ Achikochi commemorated the 25th anniversary of her musical debut.
As a voice actress, Sakamoto is known for roles in Cardcaptor Sakura (as Tomoyo Daidōji), Black Butler (Ciel Phantomhive), Monogatari (Shinobu Oshino), Fate/Grand Order (Leonardo da Vinci), and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Aerith Gainsborough), among many others. Her clear, expressive tone and emotional precision have made her one of Japan’s most respected performers.
In her personal life, she married fellow voice actor Kenichi Suzumura on August 8, 2011; the couple welcomed their first child in 2022. Sakamoto continues to record, write, and perform under the management of Fortunerest, balancing her music career with extensive work in anime, film, and theatre.
