There are 2 bands with the same name:
1) The Psalms were a Tempe, Arizona-based band founded in 1982 that featured future Gin Blossoms Doug Hopkins and Bill Leen, along with Jim Swafford (who would later co-write the Gin Blossoms' hit "Mrs. Rita") and Alan Long (replaced in 1983 by Richard Flower…and Jeff Swartz…and Steve Brown).
The Psalms released a 7" single, "A Story I Was Told" b/w "Christmas Island" followed by a full-length cassette, "No Great Cathedral". Perhaps their greatest moment of fame was as opening act on the Phoenix leg of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" tour at the Devil House, following the last-minute cancellation of another young band, R.E.M. The Psalms went through numerous personnel changes before dissolving in a sea of personality conflicts. Hopkins and Leen later formed Algebra Ranch and finally the Gin Blossoms.
2) The Psalms is a prog/art/synth grind with math rock sensibility band from Singapore. Think of The Locust with female vocals. They have just released an EP called Ishamael's Wishlist. More info at myspace.com/epsalms
