.xtrak

.xtrak has been played on NTS in shows including From The Depths w/ Drakeford, featured first on 26 June 2020. Songs played include Facc.

xtrak, also known as .xtrak, is the "effective" [nee minimal] or streamlined techno house of Todd Sines of New York, NY.

In 1993, Todd Sines went on a trip to Detroit from his then hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Through Brian Gillespie [Throw, Databass, Twilight 76, Blue Collar Records], he was introduced to Carl Craig [Planet E] and Dan Bell [aka DBX - Accelerate, Seventh City]. His first demos attracted the attention of each and he was offered a place on the Planet E compilation "elements of and experiments with sound" and a series releases on Accelerate and Dan's Seventh City label.

In mid 1994, the .xtrak material that Dan had heard was given to Peacefrog Records of Hertfordshire, London, England for the "relay" EP. Subsequently, Dan and Todd had collaborated in the production of the "packet burst" EP on Dan's Seventh City label. Dan co-produced "multiplexor" and oversaw the production of "back door" and "superuser" for the first pressing. Quickly selling out, the record was repressed with an additional track, "squawk" for release in late 1995. Shortly thereafter, another Peacefrog release, "i-node" EP came out with much praise, and was featured on Richie Hawtin's seminal Mixmag mix CD in 1995. A release as "trait' was released on DJ Hyperactive's Contact Records of Chicago, IL.

Then the .xtrak project was put on hold. Sines pursued other interests and other projects - an electro project known as cron and additional releases as enhanced for the Columbus-based label, 21/22.

In 1998, the collected material that was slated for release on Accelerate as .xtrak was then given to long-term friend Titonton Duvanté for release on his label, Residual Recordings. This material was seated alongside other more melodic techno tracks [a la Carl Craig, Dan Curtin, B12, Stasis, etc.] and thus was released as Todd Sines instead of the .xtrak moniker. In 1999, he released the "null" EP on Germany's Background Records, an early adopter of the minimal, Detroit funk sound that Sines was noted for.

Nine years later, after the recovery of several DATs, 1/4" master tape reels, and MIDI sequences, the .xtrak project has been revamped once again - featuring not only edits of earlier, raw material, but also rearrangements of existing MIDI data and archived sounds for the recent "back_up" EP on YORE records [a new Background offshoot].
