Discostan x Ibi Ibrahim - Yemeni Tunes

Los Angeles, 23.09.20

Ashti is Arabic for 'I want' when spoken in Yemeni Arabic dialect. This Ashti Discostan playlist presents 60 minutes of music from Yemen, north and south, old and new.

Unlike music from other Arab countries, Yemeni music evolved in a different matter. It is predominantly vocal and it doesn't use the maqam system. The Yemeni Oud is the basic principle of nearly every song in every genre. Ashti Discostan travels between the North of Yemen (Sana'a), and the South (Aden) and makes stops far east in Hadramout. The playlist also pays homage to iconic Yemeni Jewish voices and music, which is popular now more than ever amongst Yemen's youth. Ashti Discostan also features young voices that are reintroducing older Yemeni tunes through contemporary styles, such as Hani al-Shaibani and Kabreet band.
