Brazilian singer, Cultural icon, and key figure in the defiant and countercultural Tropicália movement, Gilberto Gil has recorded over 65 albums across five decades, covering bossa nova, samba, reggae, West African highlife, jazz fusion, boogie and more. A prominent social and political activist since early 1960s, Gil was appointed Brazil’s Minister of Culture under President Lula in 2000s, and introduced new policies around technology, digital culture development, providing support for Brazil’s black and indigenous communities before returning to music full-time in 2008.
