Focus on Duster
It's a story that is becoming more and more familiar: a band with a unique sound creates a few cult albums. Somehow the records fail to reach a broad audience, and the band splits, with the music fading into obscurity. Years down the line, the music is lifted from obscurity and shared on social media, where it finds the audience it always deserved. The band reforms, they tour, and they start making new music.
The path of '90s slowcore and space rock band Duster is perhaps the prime example of this story playing out in real life. Their first two records Stratosphere and Contemporary Movement were re-discovered and re-appraised after exploding in popularity on TikTok, where their fuzz-fogged lo-fi soundscapes were soundtracking the lives of new Gen Z fans.
