In Focus: Popol Vuh
Popol Vuh – the musical collective founded by German keyboardist Florian Fricke – is inseperable from Fricke himself. The spiritual engine of the project, Fricke was a true citizen of the world, well travelled and resolutely open minded, absorbing new cultures, spiritualities, and most importantly music with studious interest.
Fricke accquired one of the first Moog II synthesisers in Europe in 1969, and thus Popol Vuh began as a pioneering electronic music act. Eventually Fricke and his collective abandoned electronic for expansive accoustic arrangements inspired by pre-Colombian American music, Tibetan music, African music and beyond, often working in tandem with another singular German auteur – filmmaker Werner Herzog.
