Focus on Joan Armatrading
One of the few Black artists to emerge as a commercial success during the UK folk revival and singer-songwriter scene of the early 1970s, St. Kitt's-born Joan Armatrading started writing music at the age of fourteen, setting her own limericks to music played on a piano purchased by her mother as "a piece of furniture".
Continually reinventing herself over the course of a now five decade career, her uncompromising lyrics and musical styles span rock, jazz, folk and beyond.
