Focus on Three 6 Mafia
Throughout the 1990s, Memphis group Three 6 Mafia carved a singular lane through hip hop. Brothers DJ Paul & Lord Imfamous, alongside Juicy J, pulled from an assortment of stylistic influences - gangster rap, Tennessee soul, horror films, the occult - coming together to form a style initially known as "horrorcore".
The group would move away from the tag as they found wider success in the 2000s, but the swing of their instrumentals and the menace remained. The motifs they became famous for - triplet flows, deep 808s, a penchant for codeine - created an entirely new aesthetic that still informs contemporary rap.
