KELVIN BROWN SOUL MUSIC SPECIAL W/ ALAN DARKER & PHILIP WAINWRIGHT
Another all Soul music special this month Kelvin Brown is joined by two of Manchester’s deepest record collectors: Phil Wainwright and Alan Darker, who’s collections chart the rarest reaches of northern soul, ‘70s, modern soul, boogie and disco.
Both were were serious collectors in the days before eBay and Discogs, when digging involved the numerous trips around the United States in search of rare soul records through the 1980’s and 90’s. Along the way Phil bought records from the likes Underground Resistance founder “Mad” Mike Banks and unearthed the sort of records that now change hands for small fortunes.
Between them they’ve manned the decks at all dayers, all nighters and more around the country. Alan, originally an attendee of lauded Northern Soul nights like The Wigan Casino, had the dubious honour of regularly serving as DJ for legendary Manchester post-punk band The Fall.
